Rights of Way and Definitive Map Technical Officer

Job Introduction

Did you know Staffordshire has over 4500km of Public Rights of Way? This network of footpaths, bridleways and byways provides unparalleled access to Staffordshire’s countryside and is vital in supporting the rural economy, tourism and health as well as access to amenities and services.

Our specialist team provides technical support and advice associated with the county’s public path network and the wider green and historic environment.

Based in Stafford, you'll play a key part in ensuring the statutory processes and digital data that underpin the work of the Environment and Countryside Team are accurate and comprehensive.

These are busy roles, so well suited to diligent and enthusiastic individuals who want to assist in making our rights of way network safer and more accessible for everyone.

2 posts:  1 x Fixed term until 31.3.2027  and 1 x Fixed Term until 1.05.2026

Main Responsibility

Working closely with the Rights of Way Team in particular, you will:

  • Evaluate and allocate appropriately, problems and queries related to the path network
  • Prepare and process legal Orders making permanent or temporary changes to the network.
  • Gather information to inform decision-making processes.
  • Use our specialist GIS mapping systems to produce simple maps.
  • Assist the workflow of colleagues by supporting with business support tasks.
  • Assist in keeping our web pages up to date.
  • Assist our specialists visualise the information they and external bodies gather.

The Ideal Candidate

You'll have:

  • excellent IT skills with experience of collecting, managing, analysing and presenting data.
  • the ability to interpret, use and understand maps; experience with GIS mapping systems is also desirable.
  • an awareness of rights of way legislation and policy and an understanding of its practical side.
  • methodical and patient with an eye for detail and work well in a team but also be confident working independently.
  • excellent organisation and communication skills and be able to prioritise and manage your time effectively.
