Traffic Data Officer

Job Introduction

Highways and Built County | Staffordshire County Council
Grade 6 | Full‑time | Hybrid | Base: Gailey (with travel across Staffordshire)

It’s an exciting time to join our Highways service at Staffordshire County Council.

We are focused on improving the condition, resilience and reliability of Staffordshire’s road network through smarter planning, better coordination, and a strong emphasis on high‑quality data. Our teams are working hard to deliver improvements that make journeys safer, smoother and more sustainable for residents, businesses and visitors.

Highway Information Management plays a key role in this by ensuring the service has accurate, timely and reliable information. As we continue to modernise the way we work and strengthen our data‑driven approach, we are expanding our team of information specialists.

We’re now looking for a permanent, full-time Traffic Data Officer, someone who enjoys variety, problem‑solving and meaningful work that supports better outcomes for our communities.

Main Responsibility

As a Traffic Data Officer, you’ll support the delivery of our traffic data service, providing the insight needed to enable high‑quality development, help keep the network safe and operating well, and contribute to an improved experience for all road users.

You will:

  • Install, retrieve and maintain traffic counters and survey equipment
  • Collect & validate data on traffic volumes, speeds, classifications, turning movements and active travel
  • Conduct on‑site inspections, undertake minor equipment repairs and ensure reliable data collection
  • Support updates to highway information using digital systems, such as Geographical Information Systems (GIS)
  • Contribute to programming survey work, invoicing and liaising with customers, colleagues and external suppliers

This is a varied role that combines outdoor activity with digital data work, and offers the chance to visit and work in many different parts of the county.

The Ideal Candidate

We’re looking for someone who is motivated, practical and confident working outdoors near live traffic. You don’t need prior experience in traffic data—full training will be provided. You will bring:

  • Confidence working in all weather conditions
  • Experience using databases or similar systems
  • Strong attention to detail and good organisational skills
  • A positive and customer‑focused attitude
  • Good problem‑solving ability
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • A valid driving licence

A basic understanding of traffic data collection would be helpful, but is not essential.

Don’t feel you meet all the requirements? We value transferable skills, experiences, and qualifications so consider applying anyway or for an informal chat about the role, please contact Scott Denny, Highway Information Manager at scott.denny@staffordshire.gov.uk

Interviews will be held: week commencing 27th April 2026.
