Library Attendant- Burton Library (Caretaker)

Job Introduction

Do you want to work in the valued community setting of a library? In this often customer facing role, you will be dealing with customers and library personnel and helping maintain a safe and secure library environment.

The post holder will be based at Burton Library.  The library is open daily Monday to Saturday.

The successful candidate will work 10 hours a week including weekend working. This will be evening work to close the library and to cover late night meeting room bookings when required - up to 10pm Monday-Friday.

Week 1:

Monday - 16:45-18:15

Tuesday - 15:45-17:15

Wednesday - 15:45-17:15

Thursday - 17:45-19:15

Friday - 15:45-17:15

Saturday - 11:45-16:45

Week 2:

Monday - 16:45-18:15

Tuesday - 15:45-17:15

Wednesday - 15:45-17:15

Thursday - 17:45-19:15

Friday - 15:45-17:15

Responsible to:          On Site Library Supervisor

Main Responsibility

To give you an idea, some of the things you'll do will include

  • Undertaking a wide range of cleaning and porterage duties
  • Security of the Library. 
  • While the building is open to provide a visible presence in all public areas and to be on call to aid library staff as and when necessary. 
  • To be a key holder and first on the Emergency call out list for when the building is closed
  • Porterage duties, having regard to Manual Handling Regulations, including receiving goods and post delivered and distributing to the correct Department or location.
  • Cleaning and maintaining satisfactory standards of appearance of designated areas 
  • Liaising with Contractors as required.
  • Laying out rooms for meetings and events and clearing away afterwards.

The Ideal Candidate

What you'll bring

  • Experience in a security position as a key holder for a premises.
  • An ability to perform general maintenance duties and have a working knowledge of current health and safety legislation including with regard to electrical safety,
  • Manual handling. 
  • Possess good customer care and communication skills.
  • Be able to work on their own initiative and demonstrate honesty and integrity.​
