Job Introduction

We are an ambitious and forward-looking Council with a strong focus on becoming a smart county, where people and communities are enabled and supported to take control of their wellbeing.

In an era of uncertainty surrounding the UK economy, our growing and ageing population, and reduced government funding, good health and wellbeing is essential - particularly for young people who are our future workforce, taxpayers and carers.

Our current strategic plan (2022-26) describes fresh thinking and new ways of working, promoting an environment for and expectation of physical and mental wellness as the cultural norm.

At the heart of this people and communities take the lead, supported to be ambitious for the future and to make the right choices for wellbeing through innovations such as web, digital and smart technologies.  Health and wellbeing of local residents is embedded as a core focus throughout the Plan.

Out two-tier structure creates great opportunity to work across different levels of local government, building strong relationships with district, borough and parish councils.

Main Responsibility

This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a talented multi-disciplinary team whose work programme includes:

  • healthy behaviours, health protection and supportive communities
  • tackling health inequalities and inequities.
  • working across all tiers of local government to embed Health in all Policies.
  • providing core public health expertise and assurance to the health and care economy (including the developing Integrated Care Partnership/System (ICS).
  • building the evidence about ‘what works’
  • close working with partners such as NHS, academia and UKSHA (directly and via partnerships e.g. Health and Wellbeing Board and ICP)
  • training, mentoring and workforce development
  • being part of the Adult Social Care Directorate, working closely to integrate prevention into social care.
  • joint work with local universities and other academic institutions.

There will be opportunity to shape the specific portfolio of this role according to candidate's interests and experience.

The Ideal Candidate

  • You will be able to demonstrate experience in building constructive relationships within the organisation and beyond, in complex environments.
  • You will have experience of influencing, negotiating and raising the profile of public health.
  • You will provide strategic leadership on different work programmes and be able to help transform public health outcomes for Staffordshire residents.
  • You must be included on the GMC Specialist Register in Public Health or the UK Public Health Register for Public Health Specialists (or be within 6 months of registration via either route).

If this opportunity excites you and you can bring energy and enthusiasm as well as a sound public health expertise, we'd love to hear from you!

Part time working/job share requests will be considered and we also support flexible working (including remote) where possible.

If you feel you would be a good candidate for this role and you are on track to become registered as a public health specialist with the GMC or UKPHR (but not within 6 months), we'd be happy to have a chat about opportunities for a development role.
